Plain unflavoured roasted yerba mate roasted. Roasted Mate has a pleasant nutty taste and is popular in blends. Mate is loaded with minerals and vitamins. Traditionally a beverage consumed in the tropical regions of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil, Yerba Mate is the leaves and or stems of the perennial tree ilex paraguariensis. The leaves are dried over fire to inhibit the fermentation and keep their green colour and essential nutrients. Mate is allowed to age for anywhere from a few months to a year to heighten the flavour. The taste is grassy and tangy in nature. Yerba mate is a source of energy because of an ingredient called mateine. Mateine (we will consider to be another word for caffeine), is a naturally occurring stimulant that can be found in the leaves, seeds or fruits of nearly a hundred different varieties of plants.
